Traveling, quietly and free.

Some people travel to see everything. I travel to actually be somewhere.

I’m originally from Washington State, and I’ve been living abroad for fifteen years, across four countries, and traveling solo internationally for seventeen. I’ve moved slowly through cities I fell in love with on arrival and others that took time to show me what they were. I’ve stayed longer than planned more times than I can count — because a café turned out to be exactly right, or a neighborhood had a quality I wasn’t ready to leave, or because I simply wasn’t finished yet.

I didn’t know it had a name until recently. I just knew it was how I traveled when left to myself — following a gut feeling over an itinerary, staying longer than planned, taking an extra week at the seaside because I needed to. Rick Steves once said to travel like you’ll be back. That frame of mind sits just right with me.

I’m currently based in Bangkok. Before that, I spent nearly seven years in Albania — long enough to know Tirana the way you know a place when you’ve lived inside it, not just passed through.

When I research a destination I look for cafés, bookstores, food, live music, and places where I can sit still for a while. I’m not uncomfortable being somewhere alone — I love it. A good café with the right atmosphere, somewhere to sit and think, watch people go by. Photography is how I slow down and pay attention.

That’s what Native Odyssey is built on. Not the highlights reel. The actual experience of being somewhere — the coffee culture, the foodie scene, the feeling of a neighborhood at 8am, whether you’d feel safe walking home alone at midnight, which streets have the right vibe and which don’t. The things you’d want to know before you go, from someone who was genuinely there.

This site is for independent travelers who need more than a list of attractions. Who want to know if a place is actually for them. Who are maybe a little nervous about going solo but are closer to ready than they think.

I’m not going to talk you into anywhere. But if a place is right for you, I’ll give you enough to feel confident going.
